Competition can bring you the brightest future which you may have never desired. When two or more person competes to become no. 1 and to go on the highest position, it can result in two ways either the competitors will get a huge success in their work or they will be destroyed because competition can make you do anything to become no. 1. There is an example of two competitors who literally changed the world with their aim and the competition to become no. 1. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs are well-known names in the entire world. Bill Gates is known for Microsoft and Steve Jobs is known for Apple;
Microsoft and Apple both were founded in the late 1980s. They were one of the biggest rivals in the mid-1980s. But they were not rivals all the time. There was a time from 1981 to 1983 when they were very good friends and helped each other. The two CEOs of the two biggest technology hubs helped each other many times and competed for all the time, which actually defined an era of technology. Jobs dropped out of college in 1973 and then he did some works. Jobs was developing Macintosh in the early 80s with one of his college mates Steve Wozniak and at that time Microsoft was an important ally for Macintosh. Bill Gates was also a college dropout from Harvard University. At that time there was no other company than Microsoft who was developing software and Jobs needed that software for his project as it was a very tough condition for Apple. At that time Gates and Jobs were so close friends that they would do anything for each other, and the reason behind this was, that both of them were lovers of technologies and they wanted to achieve some groundbreaking success. In an internal Apple event in Hawaii, where Jobs introduced the Macintosh to some of the VIPs, Bill Gates was praising each and everything about Macintosh. Many times it was seen when Gates fly to see the work.
progress is done by Apple but the rivalry was just about to happen in 1983. Steve Jobs has a dream that Apple would lead the computer business and operating system and Microsoft would handle the application side of that business. Apple was working on Graphical User Interface, Bill gates knows that GUI is the future in the computer business, he knew that GUI soon will make DOS irrelevant and Microsoft will just become a subsidiary of Apple. But Gates had bigger plans for his computing future. Microsoft started secretly copying the Macintosh Operating System and working on its very own Graphical Operating System. Soon Jobs came to know about the plans of Bill Gates and he took it as Microsoft deceived him and they want to compete. Jobs many times accused Gates about stealing the OS but Gates replied the accusations with a smile and cool face that we both had a rich neighbor and I entered his house to steal a TC set but I found that you had already stolen it.
In 1985 Jobs was out from Apple which he founded nine years earlier, in the same year Gates introduced Windows 1.0. But jobs didn’t give up, he started his own company named NeXT which he was using as the workstations for higher educations. With his new company, he couldn’t do well as he tried to lower down the stock prices of Microsoft. He was away from Apple for about 12 years and Jobs continuously lashed out at Microsoft, in 1996 he said that “ The only problem with Microsoft is that they don’t have a taste”; By this statement, he meant that Microsoft doesn’t
have original ideas and they don’t bring very much culture in their products and their products are the third rate. In an interview with the NY Times, Jobs said that he meant each and every word which he said about Gates but he shouldn’t have aid that on the national television or in newspapers and he wished him all the best.
In 1997 when Apple was on the verge of being bankruptcy, they acquired NeXT and Steve Jobs again came back to Apple. Steve Jobs said that we need to improve our business relations and he did one thing after getting back is that they took help from their old friend Microsoft. This was an unbelievable moment for Apple users. The pact between Apple and Microsoft was for 5 years and in these years Microsoft’s Internet Explorer became the default browser in Mac, Microsoft Office was released to Apple for the coming 5 years and Microsoft would invest $ 150 million in Apple. Gates said that Microsoft’s software is very good and if we want it in the Mac then we need to treat the company who is giving it to us with a little bit of gratitude and he said that the era of setting the things in a competition is over. But the history is well known that Apple went to its peak and overtook Microsoft in the computing market by 2010. Apple entered the mobile business in 2003 and they dominated the business because Microsoft was not good in the business. Their I pods and Iphones sold like hotcakes and this made Apple world’s one of the most worthy companies.
In 2007 these two legends of the technology world reunited on the same stage and shared their experiences. Jobs said that “ Bill was the first one to build a software company and he was really focused on software way before than anyone else”. Gates replied by saying, “ Steve done a phenomenal job”. In 2011 when Steve Jobs died because of cancer Bill Gates extends his sympathy for the loss and said some nice words for Steve Jobs and he really deserved those words. Persons like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates don’t show up easily, the legends changed the technology to a level as we know it today. Their contribution to technology will be remembered for ages to come.
