Today life is more digital as all the things are online. Most people spend their time on Digital media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Whatsapp, and many others; statistics suggest that an average person spends 2.5 hours daily on social media.

Digital Meme Marketing

In early times, companies put on hoardings and advertisements in the newspaper, pamphlets others. However, as the competition and availability of better alternatives are increasing. Companies need to find out ways to reach more people and make them aware of the products of their company. Also, the companies urge to make people understand their advantages also increases with the competition. Digital marketing came into the picture, due to its large customer base and ease of reach. Nowadays, memes are a trendy thing on social media platforms.

Why meme marketing?

People share and relate to them very quickly, and that is how memes get viral. A meme is nothing more than a combination of images, bold and capitalized words, videos, phrases, and it is understood very easily in a funny way. Meme sharing has become a trend that people are following very enthusiastically. Digital marketing with memes has many advantages, and some of them are that memes are easy to read, share-able, simple to digest, trendy, relatable, to the point, and it aims for a quick laugh.

Sometimes a meme can create a big problem because, as we know that there is much harmful content on the web. In this competitive environment, anyone can mess with anything, so you need to be very careful about what you are trying to say to people. It is also the reader duty that they understand it in a fun way. Marketing with the meme is a good idea, and it has a particular advantage that memes remain trendy for a while and after a time, it goes out from social media and new meme about the new topic comes to the people.

Meme Trends

Meme trends give changes rapidly, and if you couldn’t succeed on the last chance, then the next one is just on its way. Now marketing guys need to work hard and think out of the box about sharing Digital Marketing memes with people within the flow of the current meme trend. In recent times, we have seen many examples of social media that used memes for marketing, and there are some of the biggest companies in the world. That’s how businesses survive in the extensive race of becoming no.1. Some of the examples are as follows:

digital meme marketing by big giants

There was Super Bowl in New Orleans, and the power goes down. This caused a 34-minute delay in starting the match. Without paying millions of dollars for AIR time, Oreo won the commercial Super Bowl with just one tweet. They tweeted, “Power cut? No problem” You can still dunk in the dark. It was so effective that it got thousands of likes and re-tweets in just a few minutes. Also, it was all because the timing of the tweet was so perfect.

Netflix is a well-known platform, and it is known for its broad fan following on social media. But they are keeping on going by growing their audience with funny memes.

Recently their campaign for the movie named Bird Box was a successful example of meme marketing. It worked very well as many of the audience had not watched the film before, so when they came in the acquaintance of meme related to the movie, they watched it. Many watched it out of curiosity to understand the meme because it is tempting to share the meme. You don’t understand it, so to find about it you watch the related thing. Bark Box has a fan following on social media, and they always try to engage their audience with relevant and lovable memes related to dogs.

They don’t spam their users. Instead, they post some humor with which their audience relates very quickly. Bark Box has found the fine line between the comedy and the product placement within their memes.

Apple and MacDonald using meme marketing

Apple is not just a name but one of the biggest names in the entire world. It doesn’t seemingly need any meme marketing to sell its product. Recently their Air-pods have been a massive hit in the world market. During the launch, many memes showed the price of Air-pods, and people got amazed by it. Whether it is done to spoil the brand name, it gave a significant exposure to the Air-pods in the market. This resulted in the massive sale of Apple Air-pods wireless earphones.

Many brands got embarrassed in front of their audience, and brands lost their audience too. MacDonald’s needs no introduction as it is one of the most famous franchise and fast food outlets in the world.

In 2015 MacDonald’s UK posted a meme with lines, “Him: meet me at MacDonald’s? Barber: say no more, fam”. MacDonald’s had used the wrong meme format in this meme and embarrassed themselves in front of their followers. The problem with the meme was that it was not making any sense. The original design shows a funny haircut and a picture or character of what it resembles. MacDonald’s meme does not offer any haircut picture or anything that can make sense. Also, it left users in a bit of confusion about the joke.

So, Digital meme marketing is a beneficial way to increase your products reach. Still, one needs to be very careful with it because it can make a big fuss, and you will be embarrassed, which can lead you to a worse future of marketing.
