The Story of TATA Group

When we think about business and related groups and companies, there are many multinational companies and conglomerate that come in our minds but in that list of companies, one group which immediately comes to the mind especially when we think with the Indian scenario is Tata Group. Tata Group is an Indian group of companies which is headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Tata group has been guided by one single motto which is “Leadership with Trust”, it represents the long-term development of values for all the stakeholders. Tata Group is known for its quality, innovation, sustainable activities, and evolution in businesses. Mr. Ratan N Tata once said, “ Business, as I have seen it, places one great demand on you: it needs you to self impose a framework of ethics, values, fairness,
and objectivity on yourself at all times.”

There is a huge history and story behind the Tata Group as we know it today. To know the origin of Tata Group we need to go all the way to 1868 when an entrepreneur and social worker, Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata founded Tata Group as a private trading company. In 1902 Tata group expanded itself by integrating with Indian Hotels Company Ltd and opened Taj Mahal Palace in 1903 which was the only luxurious hotel in the nation at that time. In 1904 when Jamsetji Tata passed away, his son Sir Dorab Tata took over the group as the chairman. Under his leadership, the Tata group expanded itself to a much higher level by entering into various industries such as steel (1907), electricity (1910), education
(1911), consumer goods (1917), and aviation (1932). After the death of Sir Dorab in 1932 his position as the chairman was taken over by Sir Nowroji Saklatwala, but he couldn’t remain in that position for a longer period and after six years his position was given to Jahangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata. He gave a new direction to the company’s growth as he ventured into new sectors such as chemicals, cosmetics, marketing, tea, and software services in 1968.

Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata

In 1945 Tata group introduced one of its biggest company which was named Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company, we know it today as Tata Motors. Tata motors were dedicated to developing engineering and locomotive products.
Ratan Tata who was the nephew of JRD Tata was given the position of chairman of the group. He completely focused to take the business to a global level. Under his leadership in the year 2000, the Tata group obtained a London-based Tetley Tea and in the year 2004, the group acquired truck manufacturing operations of South Korea’s Daewoo Motors. Tata group obtained the Corus Group, the Anglo-Dutch steel manufacturer in the year 2007, it concluded the largest corporate takeover initiated by an Indian firm. In the year 2008 Tata group began venturing into the automotive sector and they achieved a milestone by launching Its tiny car with a rare engine named Nano.
The highlight of this car was that it comes with the lowest price of automotive sectors and it hit the car in the year 2009. In 2008 one of the biggest achievements of Tata Group was that they acquired the British brand’s Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford Motor company.
The year 2012 marked the retirement of Ratan Tata and his position was taken over by Cyrus Mistry, but he couldn’t long last on that position, and in the year 2016 his position was taken over by Natranjan Chandrasekaran who is presently holding the position of chairman. In 2017 Tata group announced combining its European steelmaking operations with German steelmaker, ThyssenKrupp. The next year the deal was finalized but it was called off because of objections by the European Commission.
Presently Tata steel Europe is negotiating with Germany’s ThyssenKrupp for a possible merger deal. The former chairman of the Tata group Mr. JRD Tata was not just a business tycoon but he was also known as the Indian aviator. In the year 1932 Air India was created by JRD Tata and at that time it was termed as Tata Air services. In 1929 when JRD Tata got the commercial license, he founded the airline after acquiring a contract to deliver mails for Imperial Airways. In the initial services of the airline, it mainly carried weekly mails between Karachi, Chennai via Ahmedabad and Mumbai.
Tata air services were renamed Tata Airlines when its first commercial flight from Mumbai to Trivandrum was ready to set off. Tata airlines helped to move Royal troops, shipment supplies in World War II. In the year 1946, Tata Airlines was named Air India and became a public company. After independence, 49% of the stakes were taken by the government. In 1953 Indian government took the majority of stakes from the Tata group and the airline was fully nationalized, and JRD Tata was appointed as the chairman of the airline because of his dedication and passion for the career and aviation. Due to the disturbance in debt rise and the losses that the airline is facing, the government has decided to privatize it with the sole bidder Tata Group.
